It is a great misunderstanding; a great UNDERSTATEMENT to say the month of Ramadān is the month of fasting. It is a month of wilāyah!
Allāma Yusuf Binori (rah) - he said it is a month where anyone can become the wali of Allāh swt! Tell your children this concept - don’t just its a month of fasting. Its a month much greater than this. Our problem is we have fasted many many times before; but very few of us change. What if someone said to you they have been on Hajj 30 times, yet they haven’t changed. There are people right here who have spent 20/30 Ramadāns, but have still not changed.
We need to do something different this year - what is our goal? la’alakum tattaqūn (so that you may acquire piety/taqwa). Our goal is to get more taqwa this Ramadān.
Allāh swt has put several features in this month to help us; most of these features have nothing to do with staying way from food. Allāh swt is helping us get this taqwa through several ways;
Shaytān is LOCKED. If you are still lazy; then know that wasn’t shaytān making you lazy. If you are doing things which you previously assumed was because of Shaytān, then you know that the problem lies with your nafs.Fasting suppresses the nafs. Don’t make up for the whole day during iftār. Suppress your nafs; your overall eating should be less than a normal day! Allāh swt is Zāhir and Bātin - there is also an outer and inner dimension to fasting.
Some people show up in Ramadān - they’ve never prayed salāh their whole year, but they come in Ramadān…and they fast and they try to stay away from sin! This is the barakah of this month! Praying tarāwīh is a sign of the power of Ramadān. Even when people go to ‘Umrah, they don’t pray 20 rakāh nafl salāh. Look at the nūr and blessing Allāh has sent in this month - we can pray 20 rakāh nafl and we are rewarded as though we prayed our fardh!
Allāh swt made arrangement for our sins in Ramadān too. Allāh swt has said ALL creation (trillions of microorganisms too) makes du’ā, non-stop du’ā for every fasting person. Allāhu Akbar. This includes the angels, the angels who do tawāf around Baytul-Ma’mūr too! Imagine your shaykh/mother told you, I will make du’ā for you during tawāf for thirty days - we’d be amazed, we’d be so happy. Imagine, the angels are making du’ā for you and me. That Allāh swt who has given us this blessing, do you not think he will forgive that believer? Allāh swt will said ‘as-sawmu li, wa ana ajzi bihi’ - fasting is for Me, and it is I who will give reward for it! What does this mean? Angels will put all the sins on one side on the DoJ, and all the good deeds on the other - then the angels will say there is one thing left…Allāh, You said Yourself you will reward for these fasts. Do you think Allāh swt would give reward and it wouldn’t be enough?
Some people have so much taqwa in Ramadān that they are even cautious about swallowing during gargling, and they ring a mufti up if they are in doubt. Imagine we preserved and safeguarded our hayā like we preserved our fast! We can leave lawful desires for Allāh swt, so can’t we leave unlawful desires for Allāh swt?
The young man doesn’t get involved in indecency in Ramadān. It is not a joke to say you only worship Ramadān just because people come to Allāh swt in this month! People actually send a message before Ramadān, that dear honey, its Ramadān now, I will not talk to you for a month. This is due to the power of this month
May Allāh swt make this a heart changing Ramadān. Some people will get nothing from this month except thirst/hunger! They will not get any of the blessings! May Allāh swt make transform us this Ramadān Aameen ya rabbal aa'lameen.
